The sound of music is everywhere and it is a privilege to be able to hear it. To enjoy what the creative minds have composed and produced for our enjoyment and our memories. It is hearing a tune from a certain decade that will rekindle memories. Whether they be romantic ones or recollections of a certain place or time. We could have been on a hot romantic date or perhaps heard the music while cooly Christmas shopping on a late-night expedition.
So, to the three chosen music genres for this article.
If you are looking for a light-hearted kind of music that pleases everyone then it will be pop music. We are familiar with it because of the record charts and hearing the same songs several times over on the same radio station.
Pop or popular music, in its modern form, is considered by many to have originated during the mid-1950s in both the UK and the US. It originated before this, though, because it is a combination of different genres of music. It originated from the ragtime of the 1890s and early 1900s, the jazz of the 1920s and 30s, and also from 1940s big band music. So, we can thank all of these styles of music for the pop music that we enjoy today.
Various music stars have been given labels in terms of their contribution to pop music. Michael Jackson was once dubbed the King of Pop, Eric Clapton the God of Pop, and Cher the Goddess of Pop.
Jazz is a style of music that excites those who enjoy the sounds of the piano, those of brass instruments, and who also appreciate improvisation in musical performances. Also, those who enjoy hearing some very different chord sounds blend with the melody.
The earliest form of jazz as we know it today came about in the late 1800s to early 1900s. Swing, as a style of jazz, emerged between 1914 and 1926. It features the “Big Band” sound where many brass instruments are played at the same time to produce a pleasing blend of tones.
The 1940s would see the bebop style developed, which represented a more complex style than that of the New Orleans swing style. Then in the 1950s and 1960s, hard bop provided dark and soulful pitches along with blues-type melodies and the kinds of chord progressions associated with the gospel style.
Jamie Cullum is a modern singer-songwriter who embraces the jazz genre.
There is an association between jazz and classical music in that one has often inspired the other. For example, George Gerwin was a composer who would write music that one could define as both classical and jazz. In terms of the improvisations associated with jazz, great classical composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach would improvise long pieces on the piano, harpsichord, or organ.
In terms of how popular classical music is, it was reported in 2016 that Mozart outsold Beyoncé. Also, Mozart is considered the kind of music we should listen to while studying.
With regards to its composition, classical music is all about balance and elegance. It will have short well-balanced melodies and have phrases that question and then answer. Contrasting moods can be created to great effect when playing classical music.
One of the most difficult classical pieces ever written for piano is considered to be Franz Liszt’s “La Campanella”. This translates in English to “Little Bell”, and one perhaps best left to the like of Lang Lang, who will always make it look easy when he plays it.
In summary, it is pop for a blend of many different genres of music, jazz for some improvisation, and classical music for those looking for some music to inspire intellect and have something extremely difficult to play on the piano to impress friends with.
